This is a story about my struggle with an incurable neurological disorder. You will read about my painful journey from the first symptom to finally accepting this disease. Because these kinds of diseases impact everyday life, the effects can be devastating. Ataxia can and does rob people of the ability to walk, talk, swallow and balance. It can also produce autonomic dysfunction, tremors, seizures, dementia, cardiac problems--and the list goes on and on. The main thing it can take from you is hope. Researchers and neurologists cannot help you, for they are as baffled and lost as you are. My story takes you down a dark road for ten years until I finally came to terms with this disease. My belief is that each one of us afflicted with horrible neurological diseases will have to reach inside to find inner peace. I have finally done that and now I look forward to a future, however compromised it may be.
