This catalogue proposes to alleviate the frequent, time-consuming literature reviews conducted by investigators of the Cicindelidae of Canada and the United States. It contains the currently accepted status of names, taxonomy, geographical distributions of species and subspecies, classifications of recognized taxa, and references to systematics and other biology. The systematic treatment of group names of all ranks is based solely on published taxonomic data. However, important unpublished information bearing on taxonomic issues and biology is fully referenced. Names of taxa are treated in accordance with the rules of The International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. No new taxa, combinations, synonyms, classifications, or names in literature, misidentifications, and misspellings are listed. The geographical extent of the checklist includes Canada, the contiguous United States and Alaska, and their continental islands. Country or regional names applied designate extra limital ranges, and new distributional place names are given. The Geographical Abbreviations section contains a list of province and state abbreviations and their respective faunal regions. The latter is indicated as a diagonal line between the distributional abbreviations for species, subspecies and synonyms. Group names of genera and higher ranks are arranged phylogenetically. Species and subspecies group names are arranged alphabetically: synonyms are arranged chronologically. References are arranged alphabetically by author surname for all sections. Each name is followed by its author, date proposed or published, page number, and figures, if any, of the article in which the original description appeared. Generic names are followed by the type species, circumstances of designation, explanatory notes, and references to immature stages, taxonomy, redescription, biology, and keys. Specific and subspecific names are followed by the original genus if different from the present placement, original designation, type locality, geographical distribution by province, state, and country or region beyond the designated limits, pertinent comments of the taxonomy, depository of the type specimen and its sex, synonyms, references to immature stages, taxonomy, redescription, and biology, and a short description of the habitat. References are fully documented in a bibliography. A taxa name index and systemic index are included.
