This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1886. Excerpt: ... The Common Eel. Anguilla rostrata (Le Sueur) De Kay. (Lat. anguilla, an eel: rostra a beak.) Synonyms. Anguilla tenuirostris. De Kay. Murama rostrata. Le Sueur. M. bostoniensis. Le Sueur. There is but one species of this fish on our continent, although it has been described as several. It is even considered by some, M. Dareste, that our species is identical with A. vulgaris, the common eel of Europe. XI, p. 399, Dec. 19, 1878, headed 'The eel's eggs,' which says: '--The long vexed question of the eel's mode of reproduction is now set at rest. Mr. Fred Mather has reduced the evidence to the form of a 'mathematical certainty,' by actually counting the eggs in a specimen. Happening to be in Mr. Blackfo...
